Top 5 Reasons Comprehensive Sex Education is Important
1. Study after study overwhelmingly shows that comprehensive sex education helps reduce teen pregnancy by helping young people to abstain from sex and to use contraception when they do engage in sexual behavior.
2. Comprehensive sex ed programs do not encourage teens to start having sex, do not increase the frequency with which teens have sex, and do not increase the number of sexual partners teens have.
3. Medically accurate, comprehensive sexuality education is becoming the exception and students are lacking basic information. In Granite Bay, one student asked where his cervix was, and another inquired if she could become pregnant from oral sex.
4. Two-thirds of government-funded abstinence-only programs contain misleading or inaccurate information about abortion, contraception, genetics, and STIs.
5. An estimated 750,000 American teens will become pregnant this year and nearly four million will contract a sexually transmitted infection–stats that are staggering, but also preventable if every teen had access to comprehensive sex ed.
